> Answer: "In terms of paramārtha-satya, they do not exist; in accord with saṃvṛti-satya, they do exist. The Treatise says: 'The Buddha answered Subhūti: "If all sentient beings knew for themselves that the intrinsic nature of all dharmas is empty, the bodhisattva would not generate the aspiration for anuttarā samyak-saṃbodhi, nor would he extract sentient beings from the six destinies. Why? If sentient beings knew for themselves that the nature of all dharmas is empty, there would be nothing to save. For example, if there were no illness, medicine would not be needed; if there were no darkness, a lamp would not be needed. Now, sentient beings do not truly know the empty nature of their own characteristics, and therefore in accord with their minds they grasp at characteristics and give rise to attachments; because of attachments, they are defiled; because of defilement, they follow the five desires; because of following the five desires, they are obscured by greed; because of the condition of greed, they proceed to create the karma of birth and death without end."' Thus we know that based on the ordinary, the noble is established, yet both ordinary and noble are empty; through the bad, the good is obtained, yet good and bad lack intrinsic nature. Because they lack intrinsic nature, the myriad good practices ever arise; because all are empty, the one reality is eternally tranquil."
