> "Or burning incense and smearing scented paste to adorn the Buddha's affairs: burning a single pinch looks forward to the wonderful fruit; smearing an old stūpa causes sandalwood fragrance to emit from the body. Long ago, when the Buddha was in the world, there was an elder named Candana-Incense who in the past had smeared scented mud onto an old stūpa; since then, for ninety-one kalpas, a sandalwood scent has emitted from all the pores of his body, and the fragrance of utpala flowers has issued from his mouth."
