> "Or praising the Buddha's virtues and extolling the Great Vehicle: the supreme retribution is boundless, and the extraordinary cause is paramount. Praising with a single verse has the efficacy of surpassing kalpas and achieving buddhahood; chanting a single word attains the retribution of the tongue-mark and sublime voice. The Guanfo sanmei jing says: 'In the remote, immeasurable past, a buddha appeared in the world named Jewel Dignity Supreme King. At that time, a monk with nine disciples went to the buddha's stūpa to pay homage to the buddha image. Seeing a jewel image, adorned and magnificent to behold, having paid homage, they contemplated it closely and recited verses in praise. Later, when their lives ended, they were all reborn in the eastern Buddha-land of Jewel Dignity Supreme King, suddenly transformed and born within great lotus flowers. From that time forth, they constantly met buddhas and attained the buddha-recollection samādhi. The Buddha bestowed prophecies upon them, and in the ten directions each attained buddhahood.' The Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra says: 'Just like the udumbara flower, / Which all delight in and cherish, / Rare among devas and humans, / Appearing only once in a long time; / If one hears the Dharma, rejoices and praises it, / Even uttering but a single word, / One has thereby already made offerings / To the buddhas of the ten directions and the three times. / Such a person is exceedingly rare, / Surpassing even the udumbara flower.' The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'Again emitting light named Sublime Sound, / This light enlightens all bodhisattvas; / It can cause all sounds throughout the three realms / Heard by beings to be the Tathāgata's voice. / Praising the Buddha with a mighty voice, / And offering bells, chimes, and various kinds of music, / Universally causing the world to hear the Buddha's voice— / For this reason this light is accomplished.'
