> "Or they may level pits and moats, and open up roads; or construct boats and rafts, and build bridges; or build pavilions and rest-stations along vital routes; or plant flowers and fruit trees along the roadsides, relieving the fatigue of travelers and preparing for the movement of humans and animals. Within the gates of the six pāramitās, they deeply give rise to the resolve to propagate \[the Dharma\]; within the eight fields of merit, they universally direct their hearts of compassionate salvation. A single thought of wholesome cause can bring about two retributions: first, the floral retribution, receiving the happiness of humans and devas; second, the fruit retribution, witnessing the true source of patriarchs and Buddhas. Or they may bestow food, offer drink, provide broths and medicines for conditions of illness, dwellings, clothing, and all necessities. Giving peace and joy to sentient beings is the family business of all Buddhas; soothing and settling those drowning in suffering is the constant norm of great beings. This causes one who gives a single harītakī to receive ninety kalpas of blessed happiness, and one who shares a mouthful of food to receive a thousandfold maintenance. A sūtra says: 'Giving food yields five kinds of benefits: first, giving life; second, giving complexion; third, giving strength; fourth, giving ease; fifth, giving eloquence.' The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: 'When ghosts and spirits receive a single mouthful of food from a human, they repay it ten million times over.' The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'Again, emitting a light named "Tranquil Ease", / this light can illuminate the sick, / causing all suffering and pains to be removed, / and all to obtain the joy of right-concentration samādhi. / Giving good medicine to cure all afflictions, / fine gems to prolong life, incense to anoint the body, / and butter, oil, milk, and honey to satisfy their food and drink: / through this, this light was accomplished.'
