> Or undergoing execution in another's stead and ransoming offenses, one risks one's life to rescue others; or releasing prisoners from jail, one pardons punishments; or restoring banished travelers, one summons displaced people; or suspending border checkpoints, one relieves merchants' taxes; or giving relief to the poor and sick, one consoles the orphaned and solitary. Always dwelling with benevolence and forbearance in one's bosom, one constantly bears loving kindness in mind. Awake or dreaming, one does not forget the compassionate mind, extending even to wriggling and flying insects, universally shielding and protecting them all. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'Disciples of the Buddha, when a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sees a prisoner bound in five places, undergoing bitter suffering, driven and pressed by guards to the place of death to terminate his life, he even gives up his own body and life to endure various bitter sufferings. The bodhisattva at that time says to the person in charge: "I am willing to give up my body to take the place of his life; such sufferings may be given to me. Let whatever is done to him be done as you please; even if it exceeds his suffering by an asaṃkhyeya of times, I shall also endure it so that he may attain liberation. If, seeing him about to be killed, I do not give up my body and life to rescue him from his suffering, I cannot be called one who abides in the bodhisattva mind. Why is this? Because to rescue and protect all sentient beings, I have generated the bodhicitta of all-knowledge."' The Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra says: 'Building a monastery is not as good as saving a single person's life.' The Tuolanben Jing, weighing various merits, states that altogether none equals the compassionate mind pitying all crawling and conscious creatures; its merit is the most supreme.
