> Answer: "Only because they do not comprehend the absence of self-nature and deludedly take things to be truly existent do they receive actual retribution. If they penetrate their nature as empty, they will not give rise to craving and clinging. Once they do not indulge in clinging, they act spontaneously, without abiding in the causes, and ultimately receive no fruits. Therefore a sūtra says: 'When the mind arises, diverse phenomena arise.' It also says: 'Everything is mind-only made.' If the mind does not arise, external objects are always unreal. When one realizes that the nature of objects is empty, the mind is naturally quiescent. Once the deluded mind is quiescent, how could illusory appearances arise? When mind and objects are both obliterated, one naturally accords with the Way. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'The eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body, / along with the mind and all sense faculties— / all are empty and without self-nature; / the deluded mind discriminates and posits them.' It also says: 'All worldly phenomena / are solely dominated by the mind; / according to their understanding they grasp diverse characteristics, / inverted and not in accord with reality.'"
