> Fojian said to Head Monk Bing: "Whoever is called an elder must strictly have no fondness for any single thing. The moment there is fondness for something, one is harmed by external things. Fondness for desires gives rise to greed and craving; fondness for gain and sustenance causes thoughts of racing and rivalry to arise; fondness for compliance brings sycophantic petty men into alignment; fondness for victory and defeat raises the mountain of self and other high; fondness for extorting wealth causes cries of resentment and grievance to emerge. Summarising and investigating them thoroughly, none of these depart from the one mind. If the mind does not arise, the myriad phenomena naturally vanish. What I have attained throughout my life does not exceed this. You ought to strive diligently and set the standard for future students." (Nanhua Shike)
