> Fojian said: "The late teacher said: 'Grandmaster Baiyun was open-hearted and without guile throughout his life. Whenever he looked upon righteousness and saw something that could be done, he leaped forward to take the lead in person. He was fond of promoting the worthy and capable, and disliked attaching himself to others through improper compromise. On a single cot, free and detached, he sat upright all day long.' He once said to Attendant Ning, 'Holding to the Way and being content with poverty is the natural lot of a patch-robed monk. As for those whose steadfastness is shifted by hardship or success, gain or loss, one cannot yet speak of the Way with them.'" (Rilu)
