> Shui'an said: 'My late master Fozhi said: Ancestor Yan of Dongshan once told Gentleman of the Longtu Pavilion Geng, "This mountain monk having Yuanwu is like a fish having water, a bird having wings." Therefore Grand Councilor Layman Ziyan wrote in praise: "Teacher and pupil harmonize together, / A rare encounter in an era. / In their division from beginning to end, / Who could ever come between them?" Layman Ziyan can truly be said to have understood words. Lately I have seen elders of various places harboring schemes to control monks, while monks rely on influence and profit to serve the elders. Host and guest trade for advantage, superiors and inferiors deceive one another; how then could the Dharma gate flourish and the monastic grove prosper?' (Letter to Run of Meishan)
