> Jiantang said: 'In ordinary human feelings, seldom can there be no delusion. Generally, people are blinded by what they trust, obstructed by what they doubt, neglectful of what they hold in low regard, and submerged in what they love. When trust is biased, they listen to words without examining their reality, and consequently excessive words occur. When doubt is severe, even if something is real they will not listen to the words, and consequently there is listening that misses reality. Holding a person in low regard, they neglect affairs that ought to be valued; loving an affair, they retain persons who ought to be discarded. All of these come from casually indulging private sentiments without investigating principle; consequently, they forget the Way of the buddhas and patriarchs and lose the heart of the monastic grove. Therefore, what ordinary feelings hold in low regard is what sages and worthies value. An ancient worthy said: "One who plans for the distant first tests what is near; one who attends to the great must be cautious with the minute." The aim lies in widely gathering and carefully applying the middle way; it certainly does not lie in admiring what is lofty and delighting in the extraordinary.' (Letter to Supervising Secretary Wu).
