- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.57](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2023.1.57)

> The Master said: "I am not a sage; I have merely experienced affairs for a long time." As for his asking about every matter upon entering the Grand Ancestral Temple, it was to exercise caution so as not to lose the standard rules. Though an arhat is a sage, he does not know of red salt; though Dongfang Shuo was worthy, he could not distinguish the ashes of an aeon. Those who observe much understand; those who have not seen remain in the dark. Li Houzhu obtained a painted scroll of an ox: by day it went outside the pen, and by night it returned within the pen. He presented it as tribute to the imperial court. Emperor Taizong displayed it in the rear gardens to show the ministers, but none understood it. Only the Monastic Recorder Zanning said: "When the seawater of the southern Japanese realm occasionally recedes, the sandbanks and shallows are slightly exposed. The Japanese gather quadratic-pearl clams, and within the dried meat there are a few drops of remaining tears. If one obtains them, mixes them with pigment, and applies them to an object, it will be hidden by day and appear by night. On Mount Wojiao, when winds burn and lash, stones suddenly fall to the coast. If one obtains them, drips water on them, grinds the pigment, and dyes an object, it will appear by day and be hidden by night." The academicians all thought this was unfounded. Zanning said: "I saw it in Zhang Qian's Overseas Record of Anomalies." Later, Du Hao checked the books in the Three Institutes and indeed found it in an old edition from the Six Dynasties. This is truly being broadly learned and possessing a strong memory, acting upon perceiving the subtle signs.
