> Pursuing the distant and repaying kindness, I abandoned Confucianism to follow Śākya, / Scraped away old habits and washed clean worldly conditions, / Cutting off all streams, standing steep like a precipice of a thousand cubits.
> Compositions, brushes, and inkstones are all cast away and burned; / Snow, moon, wind, and flowers need not be mocked or sung.
> Wine, delicacies, wealth, and sex—never look back at them; / Fame, profit, glory, and splendor—how could you set your sights upon them?
> Latter-day followers are rash and wild, and the saddharma is diluted and thin; / They only wish to change their appearance, but when have they ever touched the Way?
> Though they speak of renouncing the world, worldly habits are not removed; / They all talk of transcending the dust, yet dust-conditions are not severed.
> Hardly having approached the lecture halls, they intend to act as ācāryas; / Not yet having entered the monasteries, they hope to become sthaviras.
> Fleeing drowning only to jump into fire, how are they not blindly foolish? / Stepping backward while seeking to move forward is truly inverted!
> Those with the mind of Śākya in Confucian dress have never been lacking through the ages; / Those in the dress of Śākya with Confucian minds are seen on every worldly path.
> The Vinaya guards against gross violence; Chan rests false conditions; / Deeply investigate suffering and emptiness, and constantly reflect on revulsion and detachment. / Dread perverse teachers and evil companions as though they were jackals and wolves;
> Draw close to good guides and fine friends as though to your own father and mother. / Lower your mind like the earth; seal your mouth like a fool;
> Break down the sense of self and others; extinguish your temperament and pride. / Reside upright in a quiet chamber, reciting and reflecting to pass the time;
> Send your thoughts to the Land of Bliss, waiting with a single mind until the end. / If you can be like this, what further sorrow do I have?
> If perhaps you are not so, you must weigh and consider it yourself.
