> Asking questions in recent times mostly attracts ridicule and slander. This is because they do not understand the intention behind raising a question, bringing forth doubt, and making an inquiry. The younger generation passes this down among themselves, mostly using words of felicitations and flattery conforming to the times; none of this is established within the ancestral vehicle. For example, ancients asked: 'How does one escape the traidhātuka?' They also asked: 'How does one penetrate sound and form?' And they asked: 'What are the upādhyāya's discourses regarding the ancestral vehicle here?' All of these were stepped forth from the assembly to resolve on the spot. Recently, brothers offer five or ten turns of words without handles, either flattering officials present in their seats or adorning and serving patrons and donors; none of this has the flavor of patch-robed monks. Moreover, they withdraw and step out from the assembly only to spout a few phrases, or at times say: 'I would not say so,' or say: 'Why does the upādhyāya not speak such and such?' Now, asking questions is meant to inspire and elevate the profound ultimate; it does not lie in advancing many words, but only two or three turns. What is prized is generating people's faith, not drifting into wantonness and inviting the laughter of worldly folks.
