> When the shrine-carrier arrives at the stupa site, after the prior offers incense and tea, the karmadāna of the funeral office steps forward to burn incense, and leads the junior disciples in bowing to request the Buddhist ceremony for enshrinement in the stupa. When finished, the monastery karmadāna recites: 'We consider that the manifestation of the two feet inherited the bequeathed rule of Vulture Peak; the display of the single shoe demonstrated the transmitted model of Shaolin. The full functioning, hidden and manifest, encompasses the Flourishing Dharma from beginning to end. We rely on the assembly to aid the awakened spirit. Namo Amitābha Buddha of great compassion and great mercy, of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss!' When the ten recitations are finished, he says: 'Having recited the sacred name above and reverently praised the transformative ritual, the essence standard of former masters \[shows that\] penetrating function brook not \[even\] Buddhas and Patriarchs; yet to open up later students, his compassionate mind still encompasses humans and devas. Collecting the hundred bones of illusory manifestation, he enters the samādhi of fiery light. Tea is poured in three libations; incense is ignited in one brazier. We receive this on the crown of our heads and practice it in reverence, bowing down to the sacred assembly.' He intones the Great Compassion Dhāraṇī, and dedicates the merit, saying: 'May the merit of the preceding recitations and chanting of scriptures be dedicated to the hall head upādhyāya on the occasion of his cremation, to elevate his spiritual rank. All Buddhas of the ten directions and the three times, and so on.' The monastery guest master intones the Śūraṅgama Mantra, and dedicates the merit as before. Next, the fellow-countrymen chant a sutra. When the assembly finishes chanting together, the head seat leads the assembly back to the monastery to attend the meal. The junior disciples, fellow-countrymen, and Dharma-kin remain at the cremation ground to collect the bones. After the meal, the Sangha hall bell is rung to assemble the community. Attendants and accoutrements are prepared as before to welcome the bones back to the living quarters for enshrining. They request the Buddhist ceremony for enshrining the bones. They hang the portrait, make offerings, and chant scriptures. Twice daily they serve gruel and rice; thrice daily they serve tea and decoctions. For ten days or half a month, the assembly chants scriptures until the sacred relics are placed in the stupa, and then they cease.
