> Waiting until the abbot's special hospitality of tea for the new head seat is concluded, the new officers in turn assume full comportment, carry incense in their sleeves, and personally visit their respective predecessors. Inserting incense, they exchange one prostration touching the mat and invite them, saying, "After the midday meal, I bow to entreat your honor to come to the dormitory for an offering of tea." They then order the tea master to invite one person each from the two ranks, and one retired officer each from the eastern and western ranks to grace the company. (If the western rank invites them to tea, the administrators sit opposite; among the prefects of the same rank, they invite the one immediately junior to grace the company, as attending by a senior would cause mutual inconvenience in seating order. If the eastern rank invites them to tea, the prefects sit opposite; for instance, if the karmadāna holds the seat in the eastern rank, when inviting to tea the assistant prior immediately junior to him attends.) In the dormitory, the special hospitality seat is set facing inward, the host's opposite seat, and the seats for the accompanying guests on the left and right. After the midday meal, the board in front of the dormitory is struck. The honoree is received, and next the accompanying guests are received. They enter their seats, are bowed to sit, incense is burned, the incense is bowed to, and the accompanying guests' incense is burned. They take their seats and tea is served. When the tea is finished, the predecessor rises, places the originally presented incense into the censer, bows in prostration touching the mat to thank the host, and withdraws. The next day, the hall office postulants are ordered to invite them for handover refreshments, with one eminent person to grace the company: for the front hall head seat, one west hall and one retired officer are invited to grace the company. In the case of the monastery storehouse rank, west hall members, retired officers, and prefects are invited to grace the company. In the monastery storehouse hangings are set up, the special hospitality seat is placed facing inward, and the accompanying guest seats are arranged on the left and right; the prefects sit opposite the host, and those of the same rank take their seats according to order. On the next day, the seating for refreshments is the same as before. The western rank stops at the guest master; the eastern rank stops at the karmadāna. Whenever there is handover tea and refreshments for attendants, the karmadāna should be invited to grace the company. (The setting of seats and performance of protocol are all the same.) In recent times, using refreshments as an occasion to invite personal guests and fellow-townsmen is contrary to proper protocol.
