> When the abbot has finished ascending the hall to preach the Dharma, he announces, saying: '(Descend from the seat, patrol the hall, and take tea.)' The assembly proceeds to the front of the Sangha hall, standing according to the diagram for chanting. In sequence they patrol into the hall. The temporary arrivals and the attendants follow the assembly in patrolling. Reaching behind the shrine of the sacred monk, the temporary arrivals face the shrine and stand opposite the attendants. When the assembly has completed the circuit and stands fixed, the bell before the hall is struck seven times. The abbot enters the hall, burns incense, patrols the hall once, and returns to his position. The administrators line up before the sacred monk and greet with folded hands, turn around, greet the abbot with folded hands, and beginning from the head seat's board patrol the hall once. The temporary arrivals and attendants follow after the administrators and exit. The incense-burning attendant steps to the center, greets with folded hands, and bows them to their seats. Waiting until the assembly is seated firmly, he steps forward, burns incense, and \[proceeds to\] the upper, lower, and outer halls. First the lower section, next the upper section; having placed the incense box back in its original position, he bows with folded hands before each censer to pay respect to the incense. He returns to his original position. The bell is struck twice. The tea pitchers come forth, and again he greets with folded hands as before, bows to offer the tea, and withdraws. The bell is struck once to collect the cups. The bell is struck three times; the abbot leaves the hall, and the head seat and the assembly exit in sequence. If pressed by other matters, or if the abbot temporarily does not join the assembly, then after the congee is finished, they take tea at their seats. The attendants carry out the etiquette as before.
