Students of antiquity were concerned only with resolving their doubts, and therefore had questions and answers; at first they did not get bogged down in words. In recent times, those calling themselves Chan travelers are mostly ignorant of cause and effect, augmenting evil habits to make a spectacle, clamoring with loud laughter, greatly losing dignity. Furthermore, when expounding the ancestral vehicle, one respectfully prays for the imperial longevity. If there are official guests or eminent worthies visiting, briefly offer acknowledgments; yet monks of the present day routinely demand excessive praise and thanks, which greatly violates proper ritual. If monastery affairs are to be discussed, hold tea gatherings in the abbot's quarters to consult; do not discuss miscellaneous affairs so as to cause the assembly to grow weary of listening.
