Master Mingjiao said: “The teaching refers to ‘abbot’ (zhuchi, ‘sustaining and abiding’)—what does this mean? ‘Sustaining and abiding’ means relying on a person to sustain the Dharma, causing it to abide forever without vanishing. Now, morality, concentration, and wisdom are the tools for sustaining the Dharma. The material affairs of the monastic park are the resources for sustaining the Dharma. The Dharma is the Way of the Great Sage. Both the resources and the tools depend on the right person before they can be established. To be good at the tools but not good at the resources is unacceptable; to be good at the resources but not good at the tools is unacceptable. Only when both are good can one sustain it and cause it to abide. Formerly, the abbotship of Vulture Peak was governed by Mahākāśyapa; the abbotship of the Bamboo Grove was presided over by Śāriputra. Therefore, the Sage’s teaching flourished, and the Sage’s Dharma endured long. After the Sage withdrew, with the passage of generations, they fell away from each other—how long has it been lost in obscurity? We nowadays are merely fortunate to be called abbots. Driven by power and profit, the realm has grown accustomed to it, tumbling together in confusion, almost becoming the standard practice and custom. If the Sage does not appear again, who will rectify it? External protectors neither inspect nor select. To wish that the wind of our Sage does not decline and the Dharma of the Sage flourishes ever more is impossible to attain. How sorrowful! What hope do I have?”
