The Monastic History states: 'As for the three directors among the administrators, they are like the main cord of a fishing net; pull it, and the myriad meshes are set straight.' In Sanskrit, it is mamati, translated here as monastery director, which is the present prior. Furthermore, the Great Collection Sūtra states: 'Monastic property is difficult to manage. I permit two kinds of people to manage the property of the Three Jewels: first, arhats; second, srotāpannas. Further, there are another two kinds: first, those who can maintain pure precepts and know karmic retribution; second, those who fear future transgressions and possess shame and remorse.'
