He spreads \[the mat\] fully and makes nine prostrations, gathers the niṣīdana, advances, and says: 'Because the matter of birth and death is great and impermanence is swift, I humbly hope the upādhyāya, out of compassion and skillful means, will bestow instruction.' Standing respectfully aside, he listens attentively to the bestowed instruction.
