Whenever the assembly is gathered, it is struck. Whenever the abbot joins the assembly and enters the hall, it is struck seven times. At the congee and midday meals when descending from the hall, when relaxing from meditation, and when stepping down from the platforms to patrol the hall and take tea on the new moon and full moon days: three strikes each (if the abbot does not join the hall, or is on leave, it is not struck). At chanting before the hall, with each recitation of the Buddha's name, it is struck lightly once, with one struck at the end in rapid repetition. The hall administrator's office oversees it.
