> The above single work in eleven fascicles was compiled based on various sūtras and treatises during the reign of Emperor Wu by the śramaṇa Shi Jing'ai. It widely praised the Mahāyāna, magnified the semblance age, and recorded matters concerning the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha; hence it is called the \*Sanbao ji\*. Later, Ai became weary of his body and consequently gave up his life. His verses on relinquishing his lifespan briefly state: 'First, seeing that the body has many faults; second, being unable to protect the Dharma; third, wishing to swiftly see the Buddha and promptly attain bodily mastery. Having attained bodily mastery, in all destinations of rebirth, wherever there is benefit, I shall protect the Dharma and save sentient beings. Furthermore, karma must come to an end; all conditioned dharmas are like this. The three realms are entirely impermanent; when the time arrives, there is no mastery. Whether killed by another or dying of oneself, one ultimately returns to such a state. This is not what the wise delight in; one ought to reflect in this way. Since all conditions have converged, my karma is exhausted on this day.' In all there were over thirty verses. Having written them in blood all over mountain cliffs and tree leaves, he then relinquished his life.
