> The above treatise in one fascicle \[was compiled\] in the reign of Emperor Wu. When \[the Emperor\] venerated the Daoist teaching and wished to equate the three teachings, the secular world was in turmoil and divergent doctrines vied with one another. Beginning on the fifteenth day of the third month in the fourth year of Tianhe, he assembled over two thousand virtuous monks, renowned Confucians, Daoist masters, and civil and military officials in the Great Hall. The Emperor ascended the imperial mat and personally debated the doctrines, wishing to equate the three teachings. On the twentieth day, he assembled them again to debate the doctrines. On the fifteenth day of the fourth month, they gathered for discussion as before. On the twenty-fifth day, the Metropolitan Commandant Zhen Luan submitted the \*Xiaodao lun\* (Discourse Laughing at the Dao), its arguments being roughly as follows, etc. On the tenth day of the fifth month, a great assembly of ministers evaluated the \*Xiaodao lun\* and deemed it impermissible; it was immediately burned with fire in the palace courtyard. By the ninth month, the śramaṇa Shi Dao'an, filled with indignant emotion, compiled this \*Erjiao lun\* to illuminate the ultimate principle. It was then presented to the Emperor, but the Emperor could not refute it; thereupon, he destroyed them together. In that treatise, it states: 'The \*Spring and Autumn Annals' Zuo Commentary\* states: "In the seventh year of Duke Zhuang of Lu, the cyclical year being \*jiawu\*, on the night of the \*xinmao\* day of the fourth month, the regular stars were not seen, and stars fell like rain." This was the tenth year of King Zhuang of Zhou. The \*Separate Biography of King Zhuang\* states: "The \*Changes\* was then consulted by milfoil divination, which said: 'A bronze-colored man of the Western Regions has appeared in the world. This is why the night was bright; it is not a calamity of the Central Xia.'" According to Buddhist sūtras, the Tathāgata entered the womb on the eighth day of the fourth month, was born on the eighth day of the second month, and also realized the Way on the eighth day of the second month. Both at his birth and when he became a Buddha, he emitted bright light. What is referred to as 'appearing in the world' is the year he realized Buddhahood. The Zhou took the eleventh month as the first month of the year; thus the fourth month of the \*Spring and Autumn Annals\* is the second month of the Xia calendar. According to Tianzhu, the start of the year used is identical to the Xia. Du Yu, calculating using the Jin calendar, said it was the fifth day of the second month, \*xinmao\*. An, calculating together with Dong Feng using the Lu calendar, found it to be the seventh day of the second month; calculating using the former Zhou calendar, it was the eighth day of the second month. Furthermore, according to Master Shen's chronicle and the stone pillar inscriptions, both tally and agree with the \*Spring and Autumn Annals\*. The Tathāgata was born in the fourth year of King Huan of Zhou, the cyclical year being \*yichou\*; he went forth from the household in King Huan's twenty-second year, the cyclical year being \*guiwei\*; he realized Buddhahood in the tenth year of King Zhuang, the cyclical year being \*jiawu\*; and he entered parinirvāṇa in the fifteenth year of King Xiang, the cyclical year being \*jiashen\*. Up to the present fourth year of Tianhe, it has been 1,205 years.' Fang comments: The divination using the \*Changes\* stated that a bronze-colored man had appeared in the world; this refers to his birth. An took it to be his realization of Buddhahood, which is feared to be a slight error.
