> The above six works, totaling twenty-four fascicles. The śramaṇa Shi Faxian of Pingyang set out from Chang'an in the third year of Long'an of Emperor An, traveled across India to seek sacred traces from afar, and searched for the sūtras, vinayas, and treatises that the Jin lacked. Passing through various countries, he learned the Indic scripts and language, and copied the aforementioned Indic texts by his own hand. Traveling from the north to the south, he next arrived at the country of Siṃhala, where there was a tooth of the Buddha. Every year in the third month, the king of that country, ten days in advance, would adorn a white elephant and dispatch a noble, eloquent, and wise minister dressed in royal attire, who beat a drum atop the elephant and proclaimed with a loud voice: 'The Tathāgata remained in the world for forty-nine years, preaching the Dharma and liberating immeasurable hundreds of millions of people. When the karmic affinity of sentient beings was exhausted, he entered parinirvāṇa. Since then, one thousand four hundred and ninety-seven years have passed. The world has long been in darkness, and sentient beings are pitiable! Ten days from now, the Buddha's tooth will be brought forth to the Abhayagiri Vihāra; all may prepare incense and flowers and come to make offerings!' At that time, it corresponded exactly to the first year of Yixi of the Jin. Faxian returned by sea and reached Yangdu, where he translated sūtras, precepts, and treatises at Daochang Monastery. A separate biography details the full record of his journeys. Counting from the first year of Yixi, the cyclical year yisi, up to the present seventeenth year of Kaihuang, the cyclical year dingsi, it amounts to one thousand six hundred and eighty-one years.
