> "The Great Way is of itself without end; / Heaven and earth are lasting and long. / A great stone can hardly be worn away, / And mustard seeds are difficult to count. / A human life in this single world / Drifts like wind passing through a window. / Can flourishing splendor fail to luxuriate? / Yet morning and evening it tends toward decay. / By the river there remains a lament; / As the sun declines, one thinks of beating the pot. / Pure tones can please the ear; / Rich tastes can delight the mouth. / Fine gossamer and silk can adorn the body; / A splendid cap can brighten the head. / Why bother to cut and shave oneself, / Indulging in emptiness so as to harm existence? / I speak not of my own petty heart, / But only bid you have pity on posterity."
