> The above one fascicle was compiled by the śramaṇa Shi Sengrui. Sengrui was a native of Weijun. Leaving home at an early age, he was extremely sharp and clever, and was a disciple of Sengxian. At the age of twenty-two he was broadly versed in the scriptures and treatises. He once listened to Dharma Master Senglang lecture on the Fangguang jing (Mokṣala's Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra) and repeatedly raised objections and difficulties. Senglang had a close bond of deep friendship with Sengxian, and Lang said to Xian, 'The difficulties Rui has recently raised could not be resolved even after repeated pondering on my part; he may truly be called a worthy disciple of a worthy master.' Later he reached the Guanzhong region and encountered Kumārajīva translating scriptures, participating in all of them. Yao Song, the Minister over the Masses of the Qin, treated him with profound courtesy and respect. Yao Xing asked Song what Master Sengrui was like, and Song replied, 'He is truly the pine and cypress of Ye and Wei.' Xing decreed an audience to observe his talent and caliber. Sengrui's demeanor flowed elegantly, and his eloquence was cultured and luxuriant. Xing was greatly delighted and immediately decreed that he be provided with stipends, attendants, and palanquin bearers. Xing said to Song, 'He is a leader of the four seas; how could he merely be the pine and cypress of Ye and Wei?' Later Kumārajīva translated the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra (\*Satyasiddhi-śāstra) and had Sengrui lecture on it. Kumārajīva said to Rui, 'In this treatise of debate there are seven passages that refute the Abhidharma, but the phrasing is slightly concealed. If you can understand them without asking, you may truly be called an outstanding talent.' When Rui came to elucidate the subtle and profound, he indeed tallied with them intuitively without asking Kumārajīva. Kumārajīva sighed and said, 'In translating scriptures and treatises, that I was able to meet you leaves me with no regrets!' He widely praised the scriptures and methods, constantly dedicating this wholesome merit with the vow to be reborn in Anyang (Sukhāvatī). Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, he never dared to directly turn his back to the west. Later, announcing his end, he joined his palms and passed away. Everyone in the same monastery saw five-coloured light emerge from Rui's room.
