> The above forty-eight works, totaling two hundred and thirty-two fascicles. In the reign of Emperor Wu of the Zhou dynasty. The Tripiṭaka Dharma Master Guṇarata of Ujjayinī in Western India, translated in Chen as Qin-yi, and also distinctively called Paramārtha. From the first year of the Yongding reign of the Chen dynasty, a bingzi year, to the beginning of the Taijian reign, a jiyou year, a total of fourteen years. Cherishing the Way and wandering across regions, he translated wherever it was convenient. All are found in Cao Pi's History of the Tripiṭaka Masters, which states: 'The ācārya passed away on the eleventh day of the first month at noon in the first year of the Taijian reign, at the age of seventy-one. His surviving texts were all entrusted to his foremost disciple, the śramaṇa Zhixiu.' The śramaṇa Fahai of Sancang Temple received them; before he collected the ācārya's texts, they had already formed books and scrolls. It states: 'The ācārya's foreign scriptures and treatises were all written on tāla leaves, numbering two hundred and forty bundles in all. If transcribed on Chen paper and ink, they should yield more than twenty thousand fascicles. What is translated now is merely a few bundles of tāla-leaf scriptures, which have already yielded more than two hundred fascicles; counting up to the Liang dynasty, it falls short of three hundred fascicles. From this one knows that the great ocean of the Buddhadharma is inconceivable. As for the Sanskrit texts of the Avataṃsaka, Nirvāṇa, and Suvarṇaprabhāsa that were brought, beyond Jiankang they are mostly kept in Lingnan at Guangzhou's Zhizhi and Wangyuan temples. It is hoped that great beings who propagate the Dharma will come together in the future to search for them, so that the lamp of the Dharma may spread its light and not conceal its brilliance in this coastal corner.'
