> At the beginning of the great kalpa when the world was first formed, heavenly beings of Ābhāsvara were transformatively born as humans, and so forth. Thereupon they deliberated and established a person of majestic virtue who rewarded good and punished evil, styling him King Sammata (Equitable King). Because the multitude collectively provided for him, he thus had the title 'Lord of the People' (From the \*Dīrgha-āgama\*. See the \*Record of the Appearance of the Three Periods\* for details). The first Lord of the People was named Mahāsammata. The second king was named Zhenbao (Ratna). The third king was named Haowei (Svādurasa). The fourth king was named Jingqi (Śānta). The fifth king was named Dingsheng (Mūrdhaja / Māndhātṛ). Down to the thirty-third king named Shansi (In the \*Dīrgha-āgama\* and \*Dharmaguptaka-vinaya\*, these thirty-three kings all succeeded as father and son; the names of the kings fully appear in the root scriptures). After King Shansi, there were ten clans of wheel-turning holy kings who appeared in succession. The first, Zhenzhe's son Boyanka (Zhenzhe is King Shansi of the \*Āgama\*), had five cakravartins. The second, Duoluoye, had five cakravartins. The third, Abaye, had seven cakravartins. The fourth, Ghandhari, had eight cakravartins. The fifth, Kalinga, had nine cakravartins. The sixth, Campā, had fourteen cakravartins. The seventh, Kaurava, had thirty-one cakravartins. The eighth, Pañcāla, had thirty-two cakravartins. The ninth, Miśrī, had eighty-four thousand cakravartins. (According to the \*Benxing jing\*, the last king was none other than the royal rishi Great Kusha.) The tenth, Ikṣvāku, had one hundred cakravartins. (The \*Lou tan jing\* and the Mahīśāsakas name him Yumo; the \*Dīrgha-āgama\* names him Yimo; the \*Dharmaguptaka-vinaya\* names him Yishima; this is King Ikṣvāku \[Sugar-cane King\], who was the ancestor of King Sujāta. Vinaya Master Yout of Liang, in his \*Shijia pu\*, says that the Śākya clan takes Ikṣvāku as their ancestor.)
