> Dharma Master Dìguān was a native of the kingdom of Goryeo. Earlier, because King Zhongyi of Wuyue was perusing the phrase 'together expelling the four dwellings \[of affliction\]' in the Yongjia ji, he asked National Preceptor Shao about it. Shao said, 'This is a doctrinal matter; you may ask Xiji of Tiantai.' He immediately summoned him and asked. \[Xiji\] replied, 'This is a text from the section on the "wondrousness of ranks" in Zhiyi's Miaoxuan. (Since the Miaoxuan had been scattered and lost, it is not known through what circumstances he knew of it; Master Ji must have previously seen a fragmentary volume.) At the end of the Tang, the doctrinal texts were scattered abroad and are no longer preserved here.' Thereupon, the King of Wuyue dispatched an emissary with a letter, carrying fifty kinds of treasures to Goryeo to seek them. That country ordered Dìguān to come and present the doctrinal vehicle; yet they forbade the transmission of the Commentary on the Prajñāpāramitopadeśa, the Commentary on the Benevolent King Sūtra, the Huayan gumu, the Wubai men, and other works. Moreover, they admonished Master Guan: 'Seek out masters in the Central Land and challenge them with difficulties. If they cannot answer, seize the doctrinal texts and return.' Once Master Guan arrived, hearing that Luoxi was skilled in teaching, he went to call on him. Upon seeing him once, he submitted from the heart and formally took him as his master. He had composed the Sijiao yi and kept it hidden in a box, unknown to anyone. The master remained at Luoxi for ten years, and one day passed away while seated. Later, people saw light radiating from his old box; opening it to look, there was only this book. Thenceforth it circulated widely in all quarters, greatly serving to guide and enlighten beginners.
