> Dharma Master Wenchang was a native of Yongjia. Having long relied on Ciyun, he fully mastered his Way. At that time, the assembly esteemed him at the forefront. He further went to Nanhu to see Fazhi, and his attainment reached even further. Soon afterward, he returned to his home region and became the first generation of Miaoguo. When the \*Miaozong \[chao\]\* was newly completed, \[Fazhi\] sent him a transcribed copy, entrusting him to lecture on and teach it, and admonishing him, saying: 'If there are any differences, you may note them down and send them here.' Among Ciyun's disciples who were authorized to lecture, there were more than twenty persons; the Master was the foremost among them. (Seen in Ciyun's \*Record of Conduct and Practice\* and Siming's \*Letter to Master Ju\*.)
