> Dharma Master Zhongyuan was named Shenzhi. Taking the precepts in his youthful years, he studied the doctrine under Jinghui at Tianzhu. When he succeeded as head of his ancestral seat, the style of the Way flourished greatly. After six years, about to retire to Caotang, he invited the head monk Yongkan to succeed him, and said to him: “The furnishings in the head monk’s quarters should all be left for posterity; what is used in the abbot’s quarters is also sufficient of itself.” The Master carried only the three robes, one bowl, an incense case, a whisk, a niṣīdana, a paper blanket, and bathing utensils; people called these the “seven things kept on one's person.” Passing through Caotang and observing the head monk's quarters, there was only a single paper blanket and nothing else. No one failed to hold in high esteem the conduct of the two masters.
