> Dharma Master Wencan was of the Xue family of Siming. He initially relied on Master Lingxiang of Xingguo. After a long while, \[Lingxiang\] sent him to enter the chamber of Fazhi. Diligently he pursued teaching and contemplation through many continuous years. In the fourth year of Tiansheng, Master Xiang, feeling that managing the stupas and temple hindered instructing his disciples, entrusted the lecturing to the Master. Fazhi composed words of transmission to encourage him, saying: 'Observing that you are a vessel for transmitting the Dharma, I confer upon you this hand incense burner and \*uttarāsaṅga\*. I desire that with each wielding and donning, the fragrance of virtue may flourish and silent forbearance be perfected.'
