> Dharma Master Chuxian belonged to the Wang clan of Tiantai. His mother dreamed of white clouds coming from the western sky into the room and transforming into a white horse, whereupon she became pregnant. At the age of seven, he entered Guoqing \[Monastery\] to rely on a master. At fourteen, he received the full precepts, and sighed, saying, 'The Buddha Dharma is vast and grand. If one does not study with vigor, how can one see the Way?' He then went to Tianfeng to read the Tripiṭaka, completing it in three years. When he visited Shenzhao, he deeply understood the doctrinal purport. Courteously silent and humble, none could fathom him. Shenzhao once claimed illness and commanded the master to lecture in his stead; as soon as the assembly heard him, they all submitted in mind and bearing. He first resided at Chongshan in Chicheng. Li Tingzhi of Gusu, who was about to govern Taizhou, dreamed of a divine being saying, 'When you oversee Tiantai, beneath the Terrace of the Fifth Patriarch there is a dragon-head nine-nine; you, Venerable, should visit him.' Arriving at the commandery, he inquired about it, but none knew the meaning. Chen Bai, a scholar from Min, understood and said, 'The Fifth Patriarch of Tiantai formerly resided at Chicheng. Now Master Xian resides there, and was born on the ninth day of the ninth month in the bingchen year. Does that not refer to the dragon-head nine-nine?' Tingzhi was astonished and immediately went to visit him. The master conversed with him on the supramundane Way, deeply striking a chord. Because the monastery halls were cramped and lowly, they planned to move it. Tingzhi was the first to donate gold and silk, and they divined a site in the southeast. On the day of breaking ground, a bronze chiming stone was discovered in the earth. Junior Preceptor Lord Li revered him especially, invited him to preside over Bailian, and petitioned to bestow upon him the title Fazhen ('Dharma Truth'). He resided on the mountain for fifty years, and those who came to his gate to receive the Way numbered in the tens of thousands. In the first month of the first year of Yuanyou, the Dharma drum did not sound when struck for seven days. In the seventh month, he informed the assembly, 'On the twenty-third day, I shall depart.' He humbly distributed his robes and bowls and treated the assembly to a meal as farewell. He admonished his attendant, 'When the morning bell rings, you must notify me.' When the time came, he slowly arose, sat cross-legged, and peacefully transformed. He composed the \*Sanhuilun\* (Treatise on the Threefold Wisdom), \*Guangming shiyuan wang\* (Ten Vow Kings of the Golden Light), and a sequel to Shenzhao's commentary on the ritual procedures, which circulated in the world.
