> Dharma Master Yuanxing styled himself Shangtang. He received the essentials of doctrinal teachings and contemplation from Zhiyong. While residing at Bailian, during his lecture on the meaning of Tianzhu, a newly arrived scholar composed a treatise to refute it. Someone took the treatise and reported to the master, “This is the perverse view of a novice; pray expel him.” The master smiled and said, “As long as you learn how he composes treatises, I can accommodate them all.” He authored the Shangtang Collection in five scrolls and Outlines of the Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sūtra in ten scrolls.
