> Beiqi awakened to the import of the single mind and the three wisdoms, and transmitted it to Nanyue. Nanyue cultivated it and transmitted it to Zhizhe. Zhizhe first unfolded a complete teaching by means of the five periods and eight teachings, tracing the source to the wonder of the root and trace in the Lotus. Having developed this understanding, he necessarily established its practice; thereupon, he spoke of what was practiced within his own mind to reveal the realization of the single mind and the three wisdoms. It was recorded in writing to be used as a mind-seal to teach later generations. From Beiqi, who looked up to Nāgārjuna above, down to Fazhi below, there were seventeen generations. I have thus composed the Chronological Table of the Transmission of the Teaching.
