> Huiming was a native of Changsha during the Northern Zhou. At fifteen, he recited the Lotus Sūtra, completing the entire work in only seven days. He became a Pure Land companion to Fayin. One evening, holding hands under the moon, they looked at each other, smiled, and said, “When the time arrives and one does not go, it is greed for life. An appointment has been set in the West, so I shall depart.” Yin said, “Could you not wait ten days for me?” Ming held up two fingers, saying, “I cannot exceed this.” Two days later, he indeed passed away. The assembly saw heavenly beings descend, with extraordinary fragrances and wonderful music, and some chanting “Sadhu!” Ten days later, Yin also died; the auspicious signs were entirely identical to Ming's.
