> Fazhi resided at Guoqing Temple, single-mindedly chanting the Buddha's name. Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta often descended, their light illuminating his body. He said to those close to him, “My rebirth in the Pure Land is near at hand. Who can prepare a meal to send me off?” The assembly prepared it for him. After eating, there was nothing unusual, and the assembly suspected he had misled them; so they stayed in his room to watch him. Before midnight, he suddenly sat peacefully on his bed, chanted the Buddha's name, and passed away. A golden light came from the west, and fishermen on the river mistakenly thought it was dawn. (The above were all during the Sui dynasty).
