> Fachi was a native of Jiangning. Upon meeting Chan Master Ren of Huangmei, he awakened to the essential mind-ground and succeeded to the patriarchal seat of Niutou. He constantly focused his mindfulness on the Pure Land, not departing from it in any movement or repose. When he was about to die, he instructed his disciples to expose his corpse beneath the pines to let beasts and birds feed on his flesh and blood, thereby creating the cause for their rebirth in the Pure Land. The disciples followed his instructions, and saw several tens of divine banners arriving from the west and encircling the mountain; the banners emitted an extraordinary light that illuminated his room.
