> Huiri sailed by ship across the South Seas to the various realms of Tianzhu to visit spiritual friends. He asked, 'In which land and which direction is there joy without suffering? Through what method and what practice may one quickly see the Buddha?' The Tripiṭaka masters of Tianzhu all praised the Pure Land. Hearing this, Huiri leaped for joy. In the realm of Gandhāra, there was an Avalokiteśvara image on a mountain; to those who prayed, the Bodhisattva would sometimes manifest his body. Huiri fasted for seven days, putting his life on the line in supplication. On the night of the seventh day, Avalokiteśvara appeared in mid-air with a purple-golden body more than a zhang tall. Stroking Huiri's crown with his hand, he said, 'You wish to transmit the Dharma to benefit people, and you also vow to be born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. It shall be as you aspire.' In the seventh year of the Kaiyuan reign, he returned east and arrived in Chang'an, presenting a true likeness of the Buddha and Sanskrit palm-leaf manuscripts. The emperor commended his virtue, bestowed on him the title Tripiṭaka Master Cimin, and he composed writings on the Pure Land that circulated widely in the world. When he was about to pass away in the seventh year of the Tianbao reign, he saw a lotus flower appear before him, shaped like the disc of the sun.
