> Demei built a hall of repentance in the western compound of Huichang Monastery. Each year during the pratyutpanna \[retreat\], he did not sit for an entire summer. Sometimes he refrained from verbal transgressions, speaking not a word for three years. Sometimes he practiced as Never-Disparaging, paying universal homage to the seven assemblies. Sometimes he curtailed his food and clothing, eliminating two parts out of four. Sometimes he abandoned worldly thoughts and focused single-mindedly on the West. Reciting Amitābha with his mouth, he persevered until the end of his life. Later, at a certain time, he entered his chamber to invoke the Buddha's name and suddenly passed away. (The above are all from the Tang period.)
