> Wu'en was a native of Gusu. He resided at Ciguang \[Monastery\] and lectured on the \*Lotus Sūtra\* and various other sūtras. Later, he saw white light emerge from a well, whereupon he fasted and recited the Buddha's name. Three days later, he saw an Indian monk holding a censer circumambulate him three times, saying, "I am Guanding. Because your practice accords with my aspiration, I have come from the Pure Land to welcome you." The next day, En ascended the seat to expound the \*Essential Points of Calming and Contemplation\*, and immediately passed away on his seat facing west. The assembly heard the sound of stringed and wind instruments in the sky, faintly heading west.
