> Lingzhao resided at Chaoguo in Huating. Every year he held a seven-day Pure Land assembly, regularly attended by twenty thousand monastics and laypeople. In a dream he saw the Three Holy Ones; kneeling, he asked them: "Lingzhao has aimed throughout his life for rebirth in the Land of Peace and Nurture; can this wish be fulfilled?" Avalokiteśvara pointed to him and said: "The Pure Land is not far; where there is a vow, there is rebirth." One day, lying ill, he said to his attendant: "My rebirth has an appointed time." Thereupon he sat cross-legged facing west and passed away.
