> The critique of Kaian states: The Contemplation of the Dharmadhātu constitutes an independent cause, maintaining that the five teachings have no stages of cutting off and subduing \[afflictions\]. If that were so, whether teaching or contemplation, they would merely display empty words, and there would be no path of cultivation and realization. As for Qingliang establishing the 'sudden-sudden', he recklessly claimed that it surpasses the Lotus Sūtra. (Master Chengguan classified the Avataṃsaka as 'sudden-sudden' and held Tiantai's classification of it as 'combining the distinct' to be a failure to capture the Tathāgata's intent. He also maintained that because the Avataṃsaka was requested by bodhisattvas, it surpasses the Lotus Sūtra.)
