> Kai'an says: The Avataṃsaka suddenly dispensed the distinct and perfect teachings, so there was no need for the esoteric; the Deer Park exclusively preached the Small Vehicle, so it was not easy to employ the esoteric. Only in the two periods of Vaipulya and Prajñā, when desiring to transform the small into the Mahāyāna and to accommodate and introduce them into the distinct and perfect teachings, did the Tathāgata first employ the two wheels of the exoteric and the esoteric. As for the Lotus Sutra's opening and revealing, where neither small nor great exist and all enter the One Vehicle, it is almost like the sun disk at high noon, utterly without slant or shadow—what application could the so-called 'esoteric' still have? From Vajrabodhi and the other masters onward, because in the degenerate age there were capacities suitable for the esoteric teachings, they transmitted this way east to establish a distinct school. Yet among those who succeeded them, the efficacy gradually waned. In the chaos and dispersal of the late Tang, the scriptures and commentaries were destroyed. Today, its teachings flourish in Japan, while what is called Yoga in our realm preserves nothing more than the ritual performances.
