> The Buddha was in the Jetavana monastery. At that time, King Prasenajit, on the memorial day of his late father, prepared a vegetarian feast and invited the Buddha to the royal palace. In the city there were also elders and householders at the same time making offerings of food to the monks, awaiting the Buddha's arrival. The Buddha instructed Mañjuśrī to divide and lead the bodhisattvas and arhats to respond to the various meal donors. Only Ānanda had gone wandering far away and had not yet returned, failing to take his place in the Saṅgha's sequence. Returning alone along the road, he had no offering that day, so holding his alms bowl, he went into the city begging in succession. He encountered the Mātaṅga maiden, who, using an ancient Brahmā spell, drew him into her chamber of lust. The Tathāgata, knowing that he had been subjected to lustful arts, returned immediately after the feast. From his crown he radiated lights of a hundred gems, where within a thousand-petaled jeweled lotus a transformed Buddha sat cross-legged and proclaimed a divine mantra. He commanded Mañjuśrī to take the mantra and go protect him, escorting Ānanda and the Mātaṅga maiden back to where the Buddha was. When Ānanda saw the Buddha, he bowed his head, wept bitterly, and lamented that from beginningless time he had solely pursued extensive learning and had not perfected the power of the Way. Earnestly he requested the initial expedient means by which the Tathāgatas of the ten directions attained bodhi. The Buddha preached the Dharma for Ānanda, entitled the Great Buddha's Śūraṅgama Sūtra. (The Linjian lu says: 'Master Zhiyi, hearing that there was a Śūraṅgama Sūtra in Tianzhu, constantly prayed that it would soon reach this land.')
