> If one can uphold the precept of not killing for a single day and night, one will definitely not encounter the disaster of weapons when it arises. If one can, with a deeply pure mind, offer a single harītakī fruit to the Saṅgha, one will definitely not encounter the disaster of epidemics when it arises. If one can give a single morsel of food to sentient beings, one will definitely not encounter the disaster of famine when it arises. In the eastern and western continents there are no fundamental three disasters, but there are three similar disasters: namely, surging anger is similar to weapons; physical emaciation is similar to epidemics; and frequent bouts of hunger and thirst are similar to famine. In the northern continent, neither the fundamental nor the similar disasters exist (New Vibhāṣā). When the three disasters arise, there are also three kinds of extreme decline: first, lifespan, which at its extreme reaches ten years; second, physical basis, where bodily stature at its extreme reaches a span; third, provisions, where wild millets are the foremost among foods, hair is the foremost among clothing, and iron is the foremost among ornaments (Yogācārabhūmi. '搩' \[zha\], the same as '磔' \[zhe\], pronounced \[as the fanqie\] zhi-ge, is the Zhou foot: for humans it is one foot, for a Buddha two feet).
