> At the four corners of Mount Sumeru there is a peak each (the \*Vibhāṣā-śāstra\* says: five hundred yojanas in height and breadth), where Vajrapāṇi yakṣas dwell to protect the devas. At the summit of the mountain, the great City of Beautiful View (Sudarśana) measures ten thousand yojanas around (the \*Vibhāṣā-śāstra\* says: the summit of the mountain is eighty-four thousand yojanas in length and breadth, of which the level area fit for habitation is only forty thousand yojanas). Its double gates are one and a half yojanas high. The city has a thousand gates, each guarded by five hundred blue-clad yakṣas bearing formidable weapons. Within the city, the Hall of Excellence (Vaijayanta) measures one thousand yojanas around; its ground is adorned with pure gold and diverse jewels, soft as tūla-cotton, yielding and rebounding with the foot (\*Nyāyānusāra\*). In the center of the abode where Śakra resides is a golden city of one thousand yojanas around (that is, the Hall of Excellence) with five hundred gates. In its midst is a pavilion named Vaijayanta. Around its four sides are one hundred and one jeweled towers and seventeen thousand chambers. Each chamber has seven devīs, and each devī has seven maidservants; these devīs are all Śakra's chief consorts. Śakra dwells together with Śacī, daughter of the asuras; and by emanated bodies he dwells together with the other consorts (\*Abhidharma-śāstra\*). The Venerable Maudgalyāyana wandered through the small-thousand world-system, and there was nothing as majestic as the Vaijayanta palace (\*Saṃyuktāgama\*; that is, Vaijayanta). The streets and alleys within the city are arranged with fewer or more dwellings for devas according to their merit. There are five hundred city thoroughfares, in which are seven markets: for grain and rice, clothing, various fragrances, food and drink, flower garlands, fine crafts, and courtesans. There are also market overseers. Deva sons and deva daughters go to and fro trading, bargaining prices according to market rules; yet although they do these things, there is no taking and no giving: if one needs something, one simply picks it up and leaves. This City of Sudarśana also has celestial provinces, celestial prefectures, and celestial villages spread all around (\*Qishi yinben jing\*). Outside the city, on its four sides, are four parks: first, the Park of Diverse Chariots (Citrarathavana; \*Qishi yinben\* calls it the Park of Variegated Chariots; the \*Saṃyuktāgama\* says it is outside the east gate), where various carriages appear according to the devas' merit; second, the Park of Harshness (Pāruṣyakavana; \*Qishi\* calls it the Park of Rough Astringency; the \*Saṃyuktāgama\* says it is outside the south gate), where armor and weapons spontaneously appear when the devas wish to fight; third, the Park of Intertwined Groves (Miśrakavana; \*Qishi\* calls it the Mixed Park; on the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days of the month, the Trāyastriṃśa devas release the palace maidservants to enter this garden, mingling and sporting with the hosts of devas to enjoy the celestial five desires; the \*Saṃyuktāgama\* says it is outside the west gate), where, when the devas enter, exceedingly wonderful and diverse sensual pleasures all arrive; fourth, the Park of Joy (Nandanavana; \*Qishi\* says entering it brings joy; the \*Saṃyuktāgama\* says it is outside the north gate), where whatever the devas play with gives rise to joy. The four parks are each one thousand yojanas in extent; each has a wish-fulfilling pond of fifty yojanas around, filled with water possessing the eight virtuous qualities. Outside the city to the southwest is the Sudharmā Hall, where the Trāyastriṃśa devas assemble in season to debate and subdue the asuras in matters conformable or not conformable to the Dharma. To the northeast is the Pārijāta tree; on the day its flowers blossom, its fragrance travels one hundred yojanas with the wind, and even against the wind it reaches fifty leagues (\*Nyāyānusāra\*). In the very center of the Sudharmā Hall is a lion throne (the \*Biyaxianren jing\* says that the Sudharmā Hall has eighty-four thousand pillars; those who enter this hall are free from offensive touch, sleepiness, yawning, and other faults).
