> Revolving Canon: Great Being Fu of the Liang, pitying worldly people who had many worldly affairs and lacked time to recite the scriptures, or were illiterate, created a revolving canon at the Shuanglin Bodhimaṇḍa to house the scriptural scrolls. His vow stated: 'If there are those who mount the gate of my canon three times, in life after life they will not lose their human body. If one is able with faithful mind to push it around once, the merit is precisely equal to that of reciting the scriptures. If one can turn it around countless times, the merit obtained is precisely equal to and no different from reading and reciting an entire great Tripiṭaka.' By continuous tradition, an image of the Great Being is placed in front of the canon, bearing the appearance of the cap and attire of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, because the Great Being frequently appeared in this manner (Foyin, writing a panegyric on his image for Wang Jinggong, said: 'A Daoist cap, Confucian shoes, and a Buddhist kāṣāya; / Harmonizing and gathering the three houses into one single house; / Forgetting the road to the heaven above Tuṣita, / Foolishly sitting in Shuanglin to await the Dragon Flower'). Those arranged as the eight great spirit-generals are the devas and spirits of the eight classes. The General Protecting the Realm was the magistrate of Wushang during his lifetime, who made a vow to protect the canon (Yiwu County was formerly named Wushang; details appear in the \*Biography of Great Being Fu\*).
