> Setting Aside Food for Sentient Beings: This has two origins. First, the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra directs that food be given to the wilderness demons, and the Vinaya directs that food be given to Hārītī and others. These beings originally consumed meat and devoured humans; the Buddha converted them to receive the precepts and refrain from killing, and thus instructed his disciples to distribute food everywhere. Today, each person in the dining hall setting aside food for sentient beings is this very practice. This is performed only by renunciants. Second, the Ulkāmukha Sūtra uses the condition of Ānanda to direct that food be given to hungry ghosts. Today, the dining hall separately provides a small vessel, and when the meal is finished, the assembly performs the ritual to distribute it; or each provides a small vessel for setting aside food, reciting mantras and distributing it at night. This practice is shared by both monastics and the laity.
