> The Seven-Seven Retreat: When a person dies, their intermediate existence (antarābhava) body, if it has not yet obtained the conditions for rebirth, abides for at most seven days. It dies and is reborn again, in this way cycling through birth and death up to forty-nine days, after which it definitively attains rebirth. If conditions for rebirth appear earlier, \[the time\] is indefinite. Now, examining the scriptural meaning, those of extreme good or evil have no intermediate existence (Yogācāra-bhūmi-śāstra: Intermediate existence is also called the intermediate state \[zhongyin\]. The extremely good are immediately born in the Pure Land, and next to that, born among humans or gods. The extremely evil immediately enter the hells or are born in the three evil destinies, dying on the very day without passing through the intermediate state). Nowadays, whenever someone dies, people unfailingly prepare a retreat every seven days to pursue merits on their behalf; this is called 'retreat sevens' so that the seeds in the intermediate existence do not turn to rebirth in evil destinies (Shishi yaolan).
